Community guidelines

Write the review you would have wanted before joining a lab.

Be educational

Help future students decide whether a lab fits them. Describe what happened and what you learned, not a verdict on the person.

Explain the supervision you experienced, the working environment and the kind of student who might thrive there.

Strengths and challenges

Most supervision has both. Naming each, briefly and specifically, makes a review more useful and more believable.

A strength: “Weekly meetings helped me keep a clear plan and get feedback on drafts.”

A challenge: “Deadline weeks were intense. Ask the lab how often weekend work is expected.”

Respect and anonymity

No insults, threats or accusations. Reviews that include them, or details that could identify someone, are returned to you with a reason so you can edit them.

Leave out names, exact dates, project titles and anything that singles out you or another person. Describe the situation and its effect on your work.

Serious misconduct

This site is not the right place to report harassment, discrimination or research misconduct, and we do not publish allegations of it. Please contact your university’s ombuds office or equivalent.

They can explain the reporting options and support available at your institution.

What happens next

  • A moderator reads every review before it can appear. Nothing is published automatically.
  • If a review needs changes, it is returned to you with a reason. You can edit it, and the new version is checked again.
  • Reviews for a supervisor stay hidden until at least three have been published.
  • You can withdraw your review from My reviews while it is waiting or published.
